How to prevent altitude sickness in Machupicchu and Cusco

“Altitude sickness” is a disease caused by geographical and climatic change, since people travel to visit a place of more height than their place of origin where the air pressure or atmospheric pressure is lower, therefore there is less oxygen than in an area with more air pressure, the “altitude sickness” normally occurs when a person is not acclimated to cold and icy climates of cities located at heights above (2400m), as is the case of the Andes Peruvians. Before coming to visit Peru and its cities located on the (2400msnm), such is the case of Cusco that is located at (3400m-11200pies), our advice is that you have previously your appointment with your doctor to make a review to see if you have any health problems (heart, lungs, throat, nose), this way we will take the necessary precautions so that in your trip you have no problem when visiting Machu Picchu or the city of Cusco.

The symptoms that tourists present due to altitude sickness are:

  •  Dizziness
  •  Nausea
  •  Vomiting
  •  Difficulty breathing
  •  headache

The citadel of Machu Picchu is located at (2400m), has a somewhat cold weather so you will   have no problem with the “altitude sickness” because after your arrival in the city of Cusco   you will be transferred to your hotel where for culture and health they will offer you a cup of   “Coca Tea”, this natural supplement is made from coca leaf that acts as a natural   acclimatizer of your body to the height and cold areas, this “coca tea” will be your faithful   friend to spend a good stay in Cusco, since you can ask for it anywhere you go in the city of   Cusco, travel agencies, restaurants, hotels, super markets, etc. In the case of needing extra   oxygen, at the hotel you can also find oxygen balloons if you so require to combat the   “altitude sickness”, another form of acclimatization is walking for at least one day through   the city of Cusco In this way your body will gradually become accustomed to the cold air of   Cusco so that afterwards you can travel without problems and totally acclimatized to Machu Picchu.

  • Walk slowly at the pace you prefer.
  • Eat light and nutritious foods (kiwicha bars, dried fruits, cereals).

In all this time that we have working with tourists and travelers we have acquired a lot of experience in preventing the “altitude sickness” since we have seen that, if you follow the advice before making the visits to the tourist places, you will have an excellent trip of the what to tell your friends and family. altitude sickness pills machu picchu

An important fact that we are very happy to inform you is that you will be able to find medicines for the “altitude sickness” these pills are known as Sorojchi pills and are sold in the pharmacies of the city of Cusco, this is good news, so we should not worry for the “altitude sickness” but only to enjoy our trip and get the best experiences in this new adventure when visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu the new modern wonder.
